Egg Experiment

Today I went to a workshop with Alana. It was on gravity and inertia. Gravity is a force that pulls objects closer to the centre of the Earth. Inertia is something that continues in it's existing state of rest.
We had a cup of water about 3 quarters full, a big piece of plastic, a little tube and an egg. We put the tube in the middle of the plastic and put the egg sideways on the tube and that all went on the cup. My hypothesis was that the plastic and tube will move but the egg won't and it will fall into the cup. I tried it and I was right. We had to do that lots of different times to make sure that that's what was meant to happen.

Wilson Game

This morning at Enrich we played a Wilson game called hula hoop amoeba. In this you have to try and jump into a hoop. We were in groups of three. I was with Nathan and Kavarn. When Darryn said jump and clapped at the same time, we had to jump. The teacher's job is to get us out. Once we had got into the first hoop we had to jump out of that one and carry on to the next one. The team that I was in came first and we almost got in again.

Plant Biology

Today at Enrich some of us did Plant biology. We were cutting up a flower and looked at it through the Dino scope. We cut open the ovary and dino scoped the ovule. The bees land on the Anther and the pollen sticks to them. Then when they fly to another plant and  the pollen comes off on the other plant and then it travels down the stigma and fertilizes the ovules and they grow seeds.  When the plant dies it dries up and the seeds fall out, and then new plants grow! We looked at the textures of the petals and it looked like heaps of little circles. It was really interesting seeing the other things inside the plants.

Sea Shepherd


Today at Enrich Grant who was a Sea Shepherd came in to talk to us about whale hunting. He showed us a video about whale hunting. The Japanese said that they are taking whales for scientific research, but if they were, they wouldn't be killing thousands of whales a year. The Sea Shepherd crew didn't eat any meat or some dairy products because they're telling other people to stop eating meat from whales and they thought it might be a bit of a hypocrisy. The Sea Shepherds throw stink bombs at the whaling ships because it taints the meat which you can then only use for research. There were lots of questions asked and there we a couple of them that Grant couldn't answer. It was very interesting listening to .Grant because I wasn't very aware of how many whales were being killed

Waihopai River Planting




This morning at Enrich we went to plant about 300 trees and plants at the Waihopai River to stop mud from going into the river and when the river floods the mud will stick to the plants. We were there for about 2 hours. When we planted them we put it in the ground, put down the felt, put in four bamboo sticks and a cover. While we were planting, Darryn's dog Bruce was running round watching us and making sure we were doing it properly. After we had been planting for a long time we all got some juice. Then we went back to working for about an hour. Then Kate, Hannah H, Hannah M and Madison thanked us for helping them with what they organized. After that we walked up the hill back to the bus and came back to Enrich.

Charcoal drawings

Today at Enrich some of us did some drawing with charcoal. It's very messy but it comes off pretty easily. We practiced on a normal piece of A3 paper and our mountains looked like cartoon mountains. But we watched a video and it helped us a lot with what our mountains looked like. It took a long time but this is what it turned out like.

Today at Enrich


Today at Enrich we played chess this morning and I won all  3 games that I played. I versed Max once and Callum twice. Then we went on to passion time. For passion time I made a game. I started it last week and didn't get it finished but today I got the points on it working and now it is done. It had a lot of scripts that the ball had to do and here's the scripts for the panels for the game. It is very fun and 2 player. I'm glad that I got that finished it. After morning tea we did some P4C. The question was "Is it okay to pollute?" Mostly everybody said no it wasn't ok. Then we discussed what pollutes and if electricity pollutes. We think that most electricity doesn't like solar power and a few others. But coal powered things let off smoke and fumes into the atmosphere. So some power can harm the environment.

I was really impressed with the way your environment group put together your presentation for the airport mural.  It was great to see you look at your first draft of your mural, pick out what worked, what didn't work, and make changes accordingly.  Refining is what can make good things even better!

Air Pollution







Today at Enrich we looked at the air pollution. Wellington is the least polluted city in the world at the moment. The most polluted city is in Iran. It is called Avhas. It is the most polluted city in the world. I definitely wouldn't want to live there. If you don't know what it looks like have a look at these up the top. In most of these places you probably won't even be able to see the stars at night. You should be very happy that we have fresh air and clean water.

Environment

Today day at Enrich we worked on our environment projects. We organize the presentation. We also did a good copy of the mural that we are hopefully doing at the airport. We sorted where we think it should go and it is very blank. This is what it looks like.

Later on after morning tea we talked about water pollution. We watched a video about the water pollution and here's a link to it.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YAoyTsyM7M. It was saddening  seeing whats happening to the sea life. We found out that tortoises and turtles are now the most endangered animal groups. I hope that after you watch this you will think about you having fresh water because lots of other don't.

Fibonacci maths 2

Today at Enrich we did the high interest station again we went though and looked at other way of how the Fibonacci sequence connects to nature. Like, a rabbits family tree and a cows family tree. Up the top there is a family tree of a rabbit. You can see that the dots go 1, 1, 2, 3 and the rest of the ones that are on there. It was great learning about the Fibonacci sequence. I will probably see how far I can get at home on a piece of paper. There is also a picture of a Fibonacci spiral.  The size of the boxes are the Fibonacci sequence.  It connects to so many things in nature!

Electricity circuts


We used 12 batteries in this one

Today for science we made light bulbs. We used pencil leads, a jar, pie tin, positive and negative wires, eight D size batteries and tape. First we got out the batteries and taped them into twos. We attached the  wires and tried a whole lot of different leads. The first one we used was the hard kind. It exploded. The next was soft and one lit up and broke. We kept experimenting and I think it was when we used twelve batteries to power a 4B lead. Here's some pictures of most of the attempts.

Today at Enrich I did chemistry with Jenni. We made elephant toothpaste. We had to put rubber gloves on to protect our skin and hands. We had to because it had hydrogen peroxide in it. We added food colouring and yeast to make it rise. This was what it looked like after we poured the yeast into it up above. Mine was the second biggest. Kavarn's was the biggest

Technology Challenge




Today at Enrich we did a technology challenge. The challenge was to make a shuttlecock launcher. We were put into groups of three. The people in my group were Hannah, Blake, Kyle and me. Our ideas were a sort of sling shot. The materials we used were card, tin foil, skewers, tape and a shuttle. We haven't launched them yet but I hope that it flies the furthest.

Custom Glitter Text



Today at Enrich we had 3 options to do. There was science (Chemistry), Maths (tessellation's) and Art. I chose Maths. I'll give you an example of tessellation's and chemistry down below. Tessellations are a pattern and elephant toothpaste is like a sort of toxic paste. We also played a Wilson game, we were in groups of 3 and we had to try and jump in a hoop , keeping our feet together.  We were almost 3rd.

pottery


Today at Enrich we made bowls. First we watched a video on youtube about how to make a coil bowl. Watch the clip above to look at how to make a kind of coil bowl. Darryn showed us how to make one and then we tried to make one. It took a long time because you had to flatten it then make the base of the bowl. After that we had to roll the cla in to snake like things then stick them on. This is what it turned out like.

Passion time

Today at Enrich we did a thing called passion time. I chose doing pottery but today we just started by making clay masks. First we started by getting a board and a big piece of clay. Then we threw it down on the ground a few times to get the air bubbles out of it. After that we flattened it and pulled it off the board. We screwed up about two pieces if newspaper and put it on the board and put the clay over it. Now we had to draw the face on it. There was some spare bits of clay so I used the pieces to make the eyes, mouth, nose and eyebrows.
This is what it turned out like.
Next time we will fire it in a kiln and then it will be real pottery

Wearable arts

Last week we went to the wearable arts. The wearable arts are clothes made out of unusual materials. Some of the materials were wood, suit cases, metal, glow in the dark material and lots of other things. There were about five touch screen computers that you could watch people wearing them. SCAMPER

Today at Enrich we did SCAMPER. Scamper has a meaning for every letter. S means substitute, C means combine, A means adapt, M means mega/mini, P means put to other uses, E means eliminate, R means reverse. My group used a headset. For S we used the cord as a rope to tie me up. For C we combined Kavarn's jacked with the headset and used it as a coat hanger .  For A we plugged it in to the news paper and pretended that you could just listen to it. For M we put it on one of the monsters. For P we used it as a whip. For E we took away half of it. For R we took a photo of Kavarn wearing them upside down.

Debating

Today before lunch we did debating with Alana. Debating is an argument about the same thing but they are either against it or they agree with it. Ours was about if the Christchurch cathedral should be knocked down or not. I was on the team that was wanting it to be knocked down. Some of the ideas that we came up with was it's a safety risk. Another was it will cost too much to rebuild on what's already there. I think it should be knocked down and rebuilt.
